Two local high school standouts have been recognized by the Alabama Sports Writers’ Association for their play in this past Friday’s games.
Benjamin Russell running back LaBrenikin Johnson and Central High School – Coosa County’s tight end/defensive end Tre Royal were among several players spotlighted by the ASWA.
Johnson was a driving force behind the Wildcats’ (9-1) 28-7 win versus Homewood.  The senior running back accounted for every single touchdown scored by BRHS on the night, and ran for 121 yards against the Patriots’ defense.
This contest marked the fifth 100-yard game for Johnson, as well as his fifth game with at least two touchdowns.
Johnson has scored at least one touchdown for Benjamin Russell in every game this season.
Entering the playoffs, Johnson has 911 rushing yards and 17 rushing touchdowns.
In a 20-7 win versus Horseshoe Bend, Royal caught five passes for 132 yards, including a 71-yard touchdown reception.
Defensively, he racked up 10 tackles, one sack and a fumble recovery
This was the second straight game where Royal had at least 100 yards receiving, one touchdown, 10 tackles and one sack.
Last week against Trinity, Royal had 164 yards receiving and a score on 10 catches.
Royal ended the season on a four-game streak of double-digit tackles.
In eight games played overall (he missed the Cougars’ first two games due to injury), he accumulated 83 total tackles, five sacks, three fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles.
Offensively, he caught 38 passes for 620 yards and three scores during the season.
