Spann named council presidentPublished 6:52pm Monday, November 4, 2013
The Alexander City Council will have a new president for the next year.
Due to the fact that two members of the council received votes for president last year, it was agreed that District Three Councilman Bob Howard would serve one year and then pass the gavel to District 5 Councilman Jim Spann.
Spann took over at the beginning of Monday’s meeting and offered kind words to outgoing president Howard.
“I would like to thank councilman Howard for his leadership,” Spann said. “He has done a great job. We have moved forward and done a lot of things we wanted to accomplish, but we still have a lot of other things we want to accomplish.”
During the meeting, construction at the Thomas C. Russell Field Airport was discussed, with the council approving two items related to the work.
One resolution was amending a contract with Gary Ingram Grading and Paving for work on the hangar development area and connecting taxiway.
Randy Thomas, community development coordinator, said several items caused the previously agreed upon contract price to increase.
“There were 34 different unit prices for different things from excavation to striping,” Thomas said. “Some increased, and others decreased, but the net result was a $24,417.53 increase.”
The city’s share of the project will only increase by $1,220.88, as the Federal Aviation Administration and Alabama Department of Transportation will be saddled with the rest of the increase.
The council also approved a resolution allowing the mayor to submit a grant for design of the North Parallel Taxiway Extension. Thomas said the city would be applying for a grant for design work for fiscal year 2013, with the grant application for construction slated to be sent in fiscal year 2014.
In other business, the council:
Approved a resolution authorizing the mayor to execute a contract for engineering services for Broad Street improvements.
Approved a resolution appointing Jackson Hatton to the airport advisory committee
Approved a resolution re-appointing Henry Foy and Kirby Scales to the Alexander City Preservation Committee
Approved a resolution authorizing the mayor to execute a contract for services with the Alexander City Chamber of Commerce for promotion of Alexander City for economic and industrial development
