Generals’ comeback falls short against Bulldogs

NEW SITE – A late comeback attempt by the Horseshoe Bend Generals fell short, as they lost 21-15 to the LaFayette Bulldogs in region play Friday.
The Generals (2-4, 0-4 Class 2A, Region 5) got to the Bulldogs’ 37-yard line on their final attempt to come back, but quarterback Major Abernathy was picked off by LaFayette’s Quentavious Whitlow at the LaFayette 14 with 43 seconds left to end the threat.
Generals head coach Jason Franklin said his team fought hard down the stretch but fell just short.
“We didn’t make the plays we needed to make down there. We drove down to about the 30-yard line and didn’t make the play we needed to make there,” Franklin said. “The kid tried to make a play, and that’s all I can ask him to do. The guys played hard. Defensively, we played better than any game this year.”
The Generals trailed LaFayette (1-5, 1-3 Class 2A, Region 5) 13-3 in the third quarter until Isac Holt capped off a 44-yard drive with a 5-yard touchdown run, but the Generals extra point was blocked making it 13-9 with 6:58 left in the quarter.
The Bulldogs responded two drives later, as quarterback Kentrel Holloway found Quentavious Whitlow for a 29-yard touchdown and Tequarri Whitlow ran in the 2-point conversion to extend the lead to 21-9 with 1:27 left in the third.
But Horseshoe Bend benefited from another short drive in the fourth, driving 43 yards with a 2-yard touchdown run up the gut by Brandon Heard making it 21-15 with 7:24 left after the Bulldogs blocked another Generals’ extra-point attempt.
The Generals forced a Bulldogs punt on the next possession but had started their final drive at their own 9-yard line.
Short runs by Abernathy and Holt set Horseshoe Bend up at the Bulldogs’ 30-yard line before a defensive holding call on LaFayette and 12-yard completion from Abernathy to Brady Fuller helped get the Generals to the 37-yard line before Abernathy was picked off.
The Bulldogs struck first on the night, capping off an 89-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown run by Tequarri Whitlow and a Wilvoski Pitts extra point making it 7-0 with 1:50 left in the first.
Horseshoe Bend closed out the first half with a 39-yard field goal by Mathan Colley making it 7-3 as time expired.
The Bulldogs’ other score came on a 19-yard run by Tequarri Whitlow with 9:44 left in the third.
Tequarri Whitlow led the Bulldogs with 85 yards on 12 carries, while Holloway was 12 for 17 for 192 yards passing. Quentavious Whitlow had four catches for 103 yards.
Abernathy led Horseshoe Bend with 134 yards on 21 carries, while Holt had 102 yards on 21 carries.
The Generals had 246 rushing yards and 289 total yards. LaFayette had 110 yards rushing and 192 yards passing for 302 yards of total offense.
Colley had an interception for Horseshoe Bend, while Trent Smith had a sack and Keith Hudson had a fumble recovery.
The Generals return to the field next Friday at Prattville Christian in region play.
