Grandparents enjoy breakfast at Councill Middle School

Published 8:03pm Wednesday, October 2, 2013

To a grandparent, there are few things better than some extra time with the grandchildren.

Councill Middle School saw that in action Tuesday, as more than 60 grandparents came for breakfast at the school’s Grandparents’ Day.

“I love it,” said Sharon Ware as she sat down for donuts and coffee with her grandchildren Chanquavious Adamson and Andrevious Giles. “Any moment I get with my babies makes me happy. They are my world.”

Debora Lawhorn said she had enjoyed a similar breakfast with her younger grandchildren last week at Dadeville Elementary.

“You wake up one day and they’re gone,” Lawhorn said. “I love them, but they’re growing up too fast.”

Fredrick Foy, who coordinates the parent/teacher program at Councill Middle, said the event is a good way to involve the whole family.

“It gives them an acute awareness of what the school is about and what we’re trying to accomplish,” he said.

The information, he added, filters to parents, neighbors and coworkers, increasing the number of people with a stake in student learning throughout the school system.

The grandparents got the chance to observe their “babies” in class, as well as having a few minutes to have breakfast with them and catch up.
