United Way to raise funds with high fashion

Published 10:34am Friday, September 20, 2013

The Lake Martin Area United Way is continuing its 2013 fundraising campaign with an event aiming to provide fashion, food and fun.
The orgnization will host a fashion Oct. 17 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the lot behind the organization’s Main Street offices.
Stephan Tomlin, initiatives coordinator for Lake Martin Area United Way, said the idea for the show was devised as a creative way to raise funds and will include a special guest.
“We came up with the fashion show idea, and I actually went to college with a fashion designer named Stephanie Carter who sells her stuff nationwide. She is the owner of Judith March,” Tomlin said. “They do game day dresses, and they sell to boutiques nationwide. She agreed to be our guest speaker and also host the fashion show.”
Tickets for the show are $25 and can be purchased from Cloud Nine, Little Black Dress and Carlisle Drug.

VIP tables are $350 and are still available. VIP tables include eight tickets, early entry to the show and other perks.
Tomlin said the show will also include participation from local businesses and aims to promote the city’s downtown area.
“We are going to do it with a twist. It’s not going to just be come to the show, watch and go home. We have it with downtown merchants to promote our downtown area,” Tomlin said. “We have Little Black Dress, Cloud Nine and people like that coming to set their stuff up and sell it at the fashion show, and some proceeds will come back to United Way.”
Tomlin added that Back Forty Beer and Hodges Winery will also be in attendance, and while it is a fashion show, it is not just aimed at women.
“There will be places for the women to shop, but it’s not just for women. We want to make it guy friendly, too,” Tomlin said. “We have had Fish Tales donate a YETI (Cooler) for the guys, so there is going to be food and drinks. We just want it to be a laid back and fun event.”
As for setting in the United Way parking lot, Tomlin said it will provide a fun atmosphere.
“We want to keep a little urban feel. We are going to have creative ways to set it up back there,” Tomlin said. “I think it will surprise people and will be a place to come and have fun.”
