Wildcats defeat Auburn but fall vs. John Carroll

Benjamin Russell volleyball coach Pam Robinson said she was happy with how her team’s heart but not so much with their overall play versus Auburn and John Carroll.
The Lady Wildcats shook off a first set loss to Auburn to defeat the Tigers 17-25, 25-13 and 15-9.
However, that momentum only last through the first set vs. John Carroll, as the Wildcats fell in three sets, 26-24, 21-25, and 8-15.
The Wildcats are now 12-4 on the year.
“I was pleased with our hitting, blocking and competitiveness,” Robinson said. “But I wasn’t not pleased with our passing. We didn’t pass well at all.”
In the Auburn match, Jernika Russell led the team with 10 kills and six blocks. Cookie Kelley also had six blocks to go along with a kill.
Jada Carr had four kills and four blocks, and Aalyiah Lawson had three kills, two blocks and 13 assists.
Chloe Owens had two kills and one block. Alexis Flowers had a block and a kill.
In the loss to Class 5A top-10 ranked John Carroll, Carr led the team with seven kills.
Russell had five kills and seven blocks.
Lawson had a team-leading 15 assists. She also had five kills and three blocks.
Owens had four kills, and Flowers and Kelley had three kills each.
“It was nice to see that the girls were able to compete with good teams given how they played,” Robinson said. “But we have to improve our defense and our passing.”
Next up for BRHS will be a road match against region foe Marbury on Thursday. Start time is set for 4:30.
