‘Cats crush VHS: Lady Wildcats improve to 11-3 on year with winPublished 5:40pm Tuesday, September 17, 2013
The Benjamin Russell Wildcats volleyball team continued their winning ways this season, annihilating Valley in their most recent outing.
The Lady Wildcats beat the Lady Rams 25-7, 25-2, and 25-3.
With the convincing victory, the Class 5A No. 8 ranked Lady Cats improved to 11-3 on the year.
Outside of the Mayor’s Cup, BRHS has been virtually invincible.
However, Benjamin Russell volleyball coach Pam Robinson said there is room for improvement.
“We’re coming along,” Robinson said. “We’ve played well at times. We played well in the Mayor’s Cup, but when you play so many good teams, eventually you’re going to take some losses. It’s been very competitive, and I don’t think anyone is undefeated.”
Jernika Russell led the Lady Cats with seven kills in the match.
Danasha Wyckoff had four kills. Aalyiah Lawson and Jada Carr each added three kills, and Alexis Flowers had two kills.
Chloe Owens had a very good match serving the ball. She picked up eight aces on the day.
Jada Carr had three service aces of her own, and Cookie Kelley had two aces.
Russell and Lawson each had one block.
Robinson said Kelley, who has been eased back into to action due to a leg injury suffered last season, has made significant strides.
“She’s at the point now where she can play all the way around the floor, instead of just the back row,” Robinson said. “She’s been doing so much better, and now it’s a matter of her continuing to get better and better.”
With Valley behind them, the Lady ‘Cats return home as they host Auburn and John Carroll on Tuesday.
Robinson expects a tough matchup as Auburn traditionally fields a strong volleyball team, and John Carroll enters the match as one of the top 10 teams in Class 5A.
“It should be a good match, especially for those who like volleyball,” Robinson said. “With John Carroll coming in ranked, and Auburn always having a good team, we’re looking forward to having a strong match.”
