The Benjamin Russell Wildcats volleyball team broke even during its most recent road trip.
Ranked No. 8 in the Class 5A Alabama Sports Writers Association’s first volleyball poll, Benjamin Russell played like it in defeating the Jefferson Davis Lady Volunteers 25-21 in game one and 25-20 in game two.
Aaliyah Lawson and Jernika Russell led the way, as Lawson had 10 assists, two blocks, one kill and one dig. Rusell had a team-high six kills and four blocks in the match. Jada Carr and Chloe Owens each had three kills. Carr added three blocks.
However, Benjamin Russell was unable to use that momentum to its advantage versus Class 2A powerhouse Montgomery Academy.
The Wildcats lost to the Eagles in two straight sets, falling 13-25 and 17-25.
Russell had a team-high six blocks and added three kills in the match.
Carr, Lawson and Alexis Flowers each had two blocks. Carr also had two kills.
Danasha Wyckoff had three aces in the match.
“Overall, it was a great outing for us,” said Benjamin Russell volleyball coach Pam Robinson. “But we had a little injury concern in the game against Montgomery Academy.”
Following the road trip, the Lady Wildcats stand at 8-3 on the year. Benjamin Russell will get right back at it Tuesday, when the Lady ‘Cats will host Chilton County and Elmore County in volleyball action.
This will be the first time the Wildcats play at home since their season-opening wins versus Valley and Opelika Start time for the first match is set for 4:30 p.m.
Following the homestand, the Wildcats will go back on the road to take on region opponent Valley High School this Thursday, Sept. 12. That match is set to start at 4:30 p.m.
