Free summer flicks debut downtown

Dadeville will boast its own outdoor theater this summer every Friday night, showing free, family-friendly flicks.

“I just wanted to give the community something to get together – to have something for the kids to do on the weekend, to have something to look forward to during the summer,” said Wendy Hodge of Mix it Up! at Lake Martin.

Mix it Up! will host the free outdoor movies near the courthouse on Cusseta Street. The first movie, scheduled for June 14 from 6–9 p.m., is tentatively set to be Oz, the Great and Powerful.

“We might have some local musicians or fun stuff like that,” Hodge said. “At dusk we’ll start a movie.”

Hodge encouraged people to bring their lawn chairs or blankets to sit on.

Mix it Up! will be selling face paint, hair wraps and Italian ice, as well as food.

“We’ll serve foods like nachos and hotdogs, and it will be really affordable,” Hodge said. “It’s just a good time. Everybody is invited.”

Free Friday movies will continue through the beginning of August and feature flicks like Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Ice Age 4, Captain America and Pirates of the Caribbean.

Some nights will feature a theme, like ‘80s night with Footloose and the Goonies.

“You can dress up 80s – we’ll probably do a lot of 80s make up and big hair,” Hodge said.

Children younger than 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
