Young Professionals begin push for membership

Published 11:24am Friday, May 31, 2013

It has been wonderful to be included in the creative process that has resulted in the newly minted Lake Martin Young Professionals group.

Our first membership drive and social will be this Monday night at J.R.’s Sportsbar and Grill on Alabama Street from 5-9 p.m. The amazingly awesome Rexton Lee will provide live entertainment! A huge thank you to J.R.’s for their support! Our local businesses are wonderful, and we look forward to partnering with all of them in the coming months.

JR’s will be offering specials for YP members Monday night. There will be $5 pitchers of beer, $6.95 sampler appetizers and $5.99 wing plates.

First, I would like to emphasize how passionate I am about this group. All the young professionals in Alex City, Dadeville, and Lake Martin must be involved in it. If you live on Lake Martin but work in Auburn, this group is still for you. Are you a stay-at-home mom who wants to be active in this community? This group is for you. Are you a young person who is looking for work in the area? This group is for you. It extends to our entire region because we are all either doing business with each other or looking to do business with each other.

Lake Martin YP is designed to be inclusive, and most importantly, it is designed to be fun. This is a social group.

Our events will unite young people while offering them the opportunity to network and promote themselves both personally and professionally. I want people to make new friends and get reacquainted with some old ones. Maybe a new couple will get a date out of this or a neighborhood supper club will spawn.

There were so many events like this I attended while living in Birmingham because there are so many social clubs, including YP, co-ed kickball leagues, Phoenix Club and various alumni associations. They hold mixers at bars and restaurants and are actively involved in all sorts of charities. It was so much fun and there was always something to do.

I would devour the events section of the Black and White paper because I was obsessed with outdoor functions, art walks and live music. I want that here.

That is why so many people right out of college move to Birmingham or Atlanta. It is why people are moving to Auburn. They feel they have nothing to do and no one to do it with.

However, sometimes when there is always something to do, people elect to do nothing because they are overwhelmed with so many options.

When I first moved home to Alex City, it took me awhile to put my finger on what I missed most. Ultimately, I missed having options. Once I realized that I had options in Alex City, maybe even more, my attitude changed.

Our young professionals have the option to get involved now. We can mold Alex City and Lake Martin into whatever we want it to be. We can recruit friends here. Or how about starting a business?

Everyone tells me that if we could get a bar and a Chick Fil A, they would move here in a heart beat. I guess there is something about fried chicken and beer that send hearts a fluttering.

Lake Martin YP hopes to assist our seasoned leaders in recruiting and marketing our area. Fresh ideas are a good thing, and we are excited to work with all of our community leaders. I hope Alex City and Lake Martin will be excited and supportive of this group.

Lake Martin YP loves fun, and who doesn’t love fun? Follow Lake Martin YP on Facebook, Twitter, and visit our website at lakemartinyp.com. See you at JR’s!
