County BOE talks budget

Published 12:37pm Wednesday, May 15, 2013

The Tallapoosa County School Board knows what it can expect moving forward after the Alabama Senate approved an education budget last week.

Tallapoosa County Superintendent Joe Windle went over how the state’s new education budget will affect Tallapoosa County schools during Monday’s school board meeting.

Windle said the budget brings positives for the school system, including a 2 percent raise for K-12 employees, but also brings negatives in the form of lost teaching units.

“There’s some good news and some bad news. We got a little extra money in OCE (Other Current Expense) – $14 million were put back in. That’ll be about another $85,000 for us that we have some flexibility with,” Windle said. “We got a little bit more money in transportation than we had last year, but we lost two teaching units.”

Windle said the loss of teaching units was due to funds being moved with the Accountability Act.

“Those two units were lost because of the Accountability Act, which took $30 million away from public education to fund tax credits,” Windle said. “We lost the library units to fund the $5 million for liability insurance. We’ll go back to the drawing board tomorrow and figure out how we’re going to do that.”
