Lady Tigers earn spot in postseasonPublished 10:29am Monday, May 6, 2013
After defeating the Beauregard Lady Hornets 6-4 during tourney play, the Lady Tigers are playoff bound.
However, they were unable to secure the area tournament crown, being blown out 21-5 by the Lady Hornets. In the tourney final, Dadeville came up just short, falling 5-4.
The Dadeville Lady Tigers reached a sought-after goal in the Class 4A-Area 5 Tournament, but perhaps it was not in the fashion they’d like.
“Overall, I’m pleased with how the kids played in the tournament,” said DHS head softball coach Brownie Caldwell. “We had some clutch hits at clutch times.”
In the tournament title game, Dadeville jumped out to a 1-0 lead early on.
Defense dominated much of the game until the fifth inning when the Lady Tigers found themselves in a bases-loaded jam with no outs recorded.
“We had a chance to get out of that inning with no runs given up,” Brownie said. “But we made a few errors, and the wheels fell off. We couldn’t quite pull out of it.”
By the third out of the fifth inning, the Lady Tigers had gone from being ahead 1-0 to being on the wrong end of a 5-1 score.
Dadeville didn’t go quietly as they answered with three runs to make the game 5-4.
That was as close as the Lady Tigers could get. Despite holding Beauregard off the scoreboard for the rest of the game, they couldn’t generate any offense of their own.
“We had one bad game and one bad inning,” Brownie said. “Things like that can come back to haunt you, and in our case that’s what happened.”
The Lady Tigers landed four players on the all-area tournament team: Shelby Rice, Jodie Caldwell, Destiny Green and Janie Moran.
Jodie and Rice each had two hits in the championship game.
Next for the Lady Tigers will be regional playoff action in Troy. As of press time, it is unknown what team Dadeville will face.
