BOE finalizes superintendent compensation

Alexander City Board of Education members approved the superintendent contract for Darrell Cooper Wednesday at a called board meeting.

Board President David Sturdivant said the five-year contract provides the same salary for Cooper as is currently received by Superintendent Lou Ann Wagoner – $132,000.

“With a lot of superintendent contracts across the state, they have common items like travel allowances. A lot have a posted salary with add-ons you don’t really see, depending on what report you’re looking at,” Sturdivant said. “What we decided to do was not have any of those extra items – it’s strictly a base salary, and that’s it. We are paying for moving expenses for his family for the initial move to our area, which is a fairly common thing.”

The contract also included methodology for an annual evaluation of Cooper, Sturdivant added.

Sturdivant said some contention arose during the meeting with the salary, as board member Michael Ransaw said he felt the salary was a little high.

Board members voted 3-1 to approve the contract, with Ransaw voting against. Board member Fred Norris was not present.

Cooper is set to begin work June 1.

“We feel good about (Cooper),” Sturdivant said. “He’s excited, and I think folks will enjoy working with him. We are looking forward to his leadership.”
