The chamber of commerce has found its concert headliner to cap off a week of fun under the sun.

Multi-platinum country music artist Jo Dee Messina will headline the SunFest concert July 27 at the Charles E. Bailey Sportplex.

Ann Rye, president and CEO of the Alexander City Chamber of Commerce, said it’s exciting to have a high-profile artist cap off the weeklong event.

“We have been diligently working on getting the talent for the concert that will be on July 27 at the Sportplex. We have just gotten a contract back from Jo Dee Messina, and she will be our headliner,” Rye said. “We’re very excited to have her.”

Tickets for the concert cost $12 and will go on sale May 15.

Rye said the goal was to provide top-notch entertainment for an affordable price.

“I think the biggest thing is when you offer a concert, you want to make sure it’s a first-class program,” Rye said. “When we were considering a talent that we wanted to get, we didn’t want someone who was just on stage singing their songs. We wanted an entertainer. And she really puts on a show.”

The first-ever SunFest will be July 20-27 and will include events such as block parties, a veterans program, athletic clinics, cheerleading and dance workshops and an Aubie versus Big Al fan day among others.

The concert on July 27 will start off at 6 p.m. with area performers including Kowaliga Idol winner Cheri Edwards, Sid Phelps and Rexton Lee, followed by Messina at 8:30 p.m. closing with a 90-minute show.

Rye said SunFest is aiming to bring the community together for an event that families can enjoy.
