Dr. John James wins Community Spirit AwardPublished 12:02pm Friday, April 26, 2013
Editor’s note: This is the last of six articles highlighting those who received awards at the Alexander City Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting.
Community spirit is something many people exhibit throughout Alexander City, but the person recognized for it this year was Dr. John James.
James said he was pleased and surprised to receive the award.
“I think a lot of people were just as deserving,” James said.
James said he thinks his dedication to community events – like Jazz Fest and the Christmas parade – as well as his support for community benefit agencies like United Way and Red Cross resulted in his nomination.
“My philosophy is to give back as much as I can locally,” James said. “I think community spirit is all about enhancing the community.”
James, of California, moved to Alabama in 1973. After working in Goodwater and Sylacauga, he opened a part-time practice in the community in 1994 and transitioned to full time in 2000.
Ann Rye, chamber president and CEO, said the award is about going above and beyond.
“The community spirit award is for a person who isn’t in a position where they have to do something for the community,” Rye said. “They choose to invest their spare time in bettering the community.”
And James said that’s something he feels duty-bound to do.
“The community has been very supportive of me, and in part I feel obligated to give back to the community,” James said. “I love doing it.”
