Alexander City to paint town purple

Published 12:09pm Friday, April 26, 2013

Purple has been touted as the color of royalty, piety and good judgment. April 28 through May 10 it will be the color of Alexander City for the annual Paint the Town Purple campaign.

Paint the Town Purple is all about raising awareness for Relay for Life.

“It’s just a great way to show a little support for the event,” said Kim Dunn at the chamber of commerce. “Retail stores could paint their windows, or they could do a purple display. They could encourage all their employees to wear purple.

There are just a lot of different ways we can paint the town purple.”

As part of the effort, the chamber ambassador Relay for Life team will sell purple, 8-inch bows for $5 each, which can be hung on doors or mailboxes.

“I think it’s going to be great,” said Lacheryl Russell, team captain for the cancer center. “We have a lot of people in the community who are survivors or had a family member who they knew who had cancer. I think it’s a very good idea.”

A new purple addition this year will be a change to the fountain downtown.

“They are going to turn the water in the fountain in the roundabout purple May 6–10,” Dunn said. “This is the first year we’ve been able to do it, so we’re excited.

“It’s just another way to bring awareness to the cause.”

To purchase a purple bow, call the chamber at 256-234-3461.
