BOE chooses new superintendent

Alexander City Board of Education members, in a slim 3-2 vote, to nominate Dr. Darrell Cooper as the next superintendent of Alexander City Schools during a called meeting Wednesday.

Board member Steve Robinson nominated Cooper, with Board President David Sturdivant and board member Kelly Waldrop voting in support of Cooper.

Board member Fred Norris nominated Benjamin Russell High School Principal Jose Reyes, with board member Michael Ransaw also voting in Reyes’ favor.

Sturdivant said the board would extend the offer to Cooper Wednesday evening.

“We’re excited about the leadership that we think he’ll provide, and we’re just ready to continue to move this school system forward,” Sturdivant said.

Board members debated the candidates in executive session for close to two hours before reconvening to vote.

“I think the discussion went well. We had two candidates we thought were outstanding,” Norris said. “We went into executive session, and we discussed the two candidates in further detail, and we all came to a conclusion as to who would be the best candidate to represent our schools and take us to the next level.

“Quite naturally, we had different opinions, and we came to the consensus that Dr. Cooper would be the ideal candidate. I will support him to the fullest.”

Cooper has served as the assistant superintendent for secondary schools in the Jasper City Schools since 2007.
