Derby contest to raise money for schools

Published 12:21pm Friday, April 19, 2013

Little Black Dress is asking for locals to pony up some dough for a good cause.

The boutique is holding its first-ever Derby Hat Contest and Fundraiser.

All proceeds go to the Alexander City Schools Education Foundation, and the funds will be used to improve the educational experience of local students.

“We’re trying to put iPads in the hands of every student,” said Little Black Dress owner and ACSEF board member Stephanie Smith. “Every dollar helps us get closer to that goal.”

Participants must donate $10 at Little Black Dress to receive a Derby hat.

“You can decorate your hat in Derby fashion however you want to,” Smith said.

After that, participants should return the decorated hat to LBD by 3 p.m. April 27. The hats will then be judged in three separate categories.

“We’ll have the Kids’ Choice category, where children will pick which hat they like best,” Smith said. “There will also be a People’s Choice category, where I will upload pictures of the hats to Facebook and people can vote on them from there. We’ll have a Judges’ Choice category as well.”

Category winners will receive $50 and a gift card to LBD worth $50.

The winners will be revealed during the week of April 28-May 4, hopefully by Monday or Tuesday, Smith said.

The hats will then be returned to contestants so they can wear them during Derby day at Russell Crossroads on May 4 during the 139th running of the Kentucky Derby.

For more information, you can contact Smith at LBD or by calling the shop at (256) 234-9099.
