‘Cats tennis wins area tourney

In terms of seeding, the Benjamin Russell Wildcats boys’ tennis team started its sectional tournament as the top team in the field.
BRHS finished the same way by winning its sectional tournament this past Tuesday.
“We came together as the season progressed,” BRHS boys tennis coach Wes Coleman said. “We set ourselves up with our regular season success to do well in this tournament, and we went out there and took care of business on the court. It was a littler warmer than expected so we had to battle the heat a little bit. We played well.”
The Wildcats boys’ team — which is made up of Blake Grimes, Matt Brown, Will Sewell, Chris Cunningham, Austin Smith and Joseph Schouten, nearly pulled off a clean sweep of sectional championships.
Grimes, Brown, Sewell, Smith and Schouten each won sectional titles.
In doubles action, Benjamin Russell’s three teams (Grimes/Brown, Sewell/Smith and Cunningham/Schouten) each claimed sectional crowns.
BRHS only lost one match during the entire tournament.
“I’m very thrilled that we were able to pull this off,” Coleman said.
Coleman added that as a result of the sectional tournament, the boys are likely to have a more manageable road to the Class 5A state championship.
“As sectional champions, this will likely give us a better draw,” he said. “We’re going to face a team that finished runner-up in its sectional tournament. Hopefully we can take advantage of that draw and win a few matches.”
The boys’ and girls’ Class 5A tennis state championship will be held in Decatur April 22 and 23.
