Recipe contest heats up on Lake Martin

Members of the communities around the Lake Martin area have a chance to take their best dishes out of the frying pan and into Lake Martin Living magazine.

The publication is holding a recipe contest, and the proceeds from it will go toward benefiting Meals on Wheels.

“In Lake Martin Living, we love to feature recipes from people in the communities around the lake,” said Betsy Iler, managing editor of Lake Martin Living magazine. “We also believe that Meals on Wheels is an important ministry in our community, and we thought the recipe contest would be a fun way to find great recipes and contribute to a much-needed community service. After all, both efforts are all about feeding people.”

Entrants into the contest will submit their recipes and a $25 entry fee to Lake Martin Living magazine and then prepare their recipes for a panel of professional judges, including Rob McDaniel, executive chef at SpringHouse.

The recipe deemed to be the best will win a $200 prize and will be featured on the cover of the May issue of Lake Martin Living.

Other impressive recipes will be recognized as well.

“Our judges will choose their favorite recipes, and those will be featured in future issues of the magazine,” Iler said.

The recipes must be prepared and brought to Emporium Wine, 128 Calhoun St., Alexander City, by 3:45 p.m. on Saturday, April 27.

The event takes place on April 27 at 4 p.m. on Emporium Wine. It is open to the public and attendance cost is $10, which covers a wine and cheese reception to be held following the contest.

“We’re excited about our very first recipe contest,” Iler said. “We encourage everyone to submit the favorite recipes. We also hope everyone will to see who wins and to help us help the Meals on Wheels in our community.”

Prospective entrants should send their recipe and entry fee to Betsy Iler, Lake Martin Living magazine, located at 548 Cherokee Road in Alexander City.

Entrants can email their recipe to Iler at, but entries will not be official until the entry fee is received.

Submissions for the contest will be accepted through April 19.
