Evening wreck claims two lives

Police are currently investigating an accident that claimed the lives of two Alexander City residents.

The accident occurred at the intersection of Dobbs Road and Ala. Hwy. 63 North around 11:04 p.m., according to the Alexander City Police Department.

Police said they believe the accident was caused by a 2002 black BMW driven by Richard Walls, 19, of Alexander City. Walls allegedly ran a stop sign and struck a 2000 Dodge Caravan that was traveling along Hwy. 63.

Both occupants of the Caravan – Debra Kay Gandy, 58, and Austin Marvin Gandy, 53 – were killed in the accident.

Walls has been charged with two counts of murder and is currently in police custody.

 Police would not comment on whether alcohol was a factor in the crash, and no further details about the accident were available, police said, because the incident is part of a criminal investigation.The family of the victims will receive friends Wednesday, April 10, from 4 – 8 p.m. at Radney Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Comer Memorial United Methodist Church with burial to follow at the city cemetery.
