BRHS splits with Phenix City

An away weekend double-header against Phenix City left the Benjamin Russell Wildcats with mixed results.
BRHS (18-13) lost the first game 6-2, then came back to win the second game 6-1.
Recaps are as follows.

BRHS 2, Phenix City 6 (Game two)
Caleb Brooks took the loss for the Wildcats in the opener, pitching one and a third  innings, giving up three runs.
BRHS fell behind 3-0 early on, but Morgan Fuller tripled down the right field line with one out and came in to score off Marquis Odem’s infield single.
Zac Rogers followed by hitting a line drive single to right center. He stole second base to get himself in scoring position.
A two-out Blake McClellan single to left field scored Rogers, making the score to 3-2 Phenix City.
Phenix City scored two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning off Craig Crouch, who came in as relief.
Braxton Pitts ended up recording the third out of the inning, making the score 5-2. BRHS threatened again in the top of the fifth when Rogers doubled to the right center field wall to lead off the inning, but the ‘Cats were unable to score leaving the score 5-2.
Phenix City added another  run for insurance.
The Wildcats were led at the plate by Rogers and Fuller, who had two hits each. Sean Rape, Odem and McClellan all had one hit each.

BRHS 6, Phenix City 1 (Game two)   
The Wildcats bounced back in the second game to take a 6-1 victory.
Bryant Horn was the winning pitcher for the Wildcats.
Horn went four innings, allowing one run on three hits. He struck out four batters.
Daniel Whatley pitched a scoreless fifth and sixth inning allowing only one hit, and Nathan Mitchell closed it out with a scoreless seventh.
The Wildcats were down 1-0 entering the fourth inning, but BRHS scored four in the inning to seize control of the game.
Odem got things started with an infield single over the pitcher’s head, and he advanced to second base on a single to right field by Rape.
Brooks  scored Odem on a hard grounder off the third baseman, but Rape was thrown out at third base by the left fielder.
After Horn walked on four straight pitches, McClellan reached on an error by the third baseman. The error also allowed Brooks to cross home plate.
Austin Moncus drove in Brooks and McClellan with a single to left field.
With one out in the top of the fifth, Rogers singled to center field, and a left-field single from Rape plated Rogers.
The Wildcats added another run when Horn reached on a hit that bounced off the shortstop’s glove.
Horn swiped second base then advanced to third off a sacrifice bunt by McClellan, and Horn would score on a passed ball from the catcher.
Next for the Wildcats is a road game at Marbury. That game starts at 5 p.m. today. The ‘Cats then travel to face Sylacauga on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
Benjamin Russell then returns back home on Friday as it take on Marbury in a doubleheader.
This game also marks Senior Night for the Wildcats.
Game one is scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m.
