Montgomery mayor speaks at chamber annual meeting
Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange spoke to a packed house Friday at the Alexander City Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting.
Strange led a discussion of how to make a city more attractive and posed a rhetorical question for those in attendance.
“Do you love Alexander City?” Strange asked. “There is a difference between appreciation and love.”
Strange used Chicago as an example of a city that is beloved by its citizens. He showed several slides of landmarks in Chicago, including a slide depicting Crown Fountain, a large tower that spews water out of a giant face.
Crown Fountain is well liked by children in the city, but while this landmark cost millions to construct, Strange said there are lower-cost options.
“How about building a park or playground with a couple of garden hoses with oscillating sprinkler heads?” Strange said. “You could do this in Alexander City, and the kids would love it. If the kids are happy, the parents are happy.”
Strange then talked about what Montgomery has done to try to make the city more fun and attractive.
“We put together a group of young people and posed the question, ‘what can we do to have fun in Montgomery?” Strange said. “Frankly, we stole some ideas.”
