New women’s book club kicks off with Life of PiPublished 11:59am Friday, April 5, 2013
Southern Chicks Reading for Kicks is a hip women’s book club that is uniting a new wave of Alex City women.
The club met at the beautiful home of Jill Dark last Thursday evening to discuss Life of Pi by Yann Martel over Asian inspired fare. Life of Pi is somewhat difficult to get into at first, but once readers are invested in the plight of the young boy and the tiger lost at sea, they cannot put it down.
The religious thread makes for interesting debate.
At the end of the day … what do we choose to believe?
Fellowship, wine, gossip and thought-provoking discussion are what make a successful book club.
For April, the club switched gears and chose a thriller, Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn.
SPOTTED: Jill Dark, Natalie Dark, Erin Fletcher, Emily McDaniel, Jessica Sanford, Lacey Howell, Carrie Wilder, and Nicki Dozier.
Jamie Browne played Café 128 last Friday evening to yet another large crowd. The vibe was mellow and BR Cohn was in many glasses. Support downtown.
The Alex City Schools Education Foundation Art Exhibit will be on Monday at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall. Do make plans to attend. Support the arts.

As an Auburn grad, I have my own favorite Toomer’s memory that involves a late night photo shoot wrapped up in the toilet paper. It felt right at the time.
