Local schools prepare for kindergarten registration

Kindergarten is a monumental milestone for most children, and the process begins soon with registration at Dadeville Elementary School. “It’s an opportunity for parents to come out and fill out the registration paperwork,” said school counselor Christi Jones.

DES will offer registration two days: April 5 and April 8 from 8 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. Parents should bring two proofs of residency as well as a copy of the child’s birth certificate and Social Security card and a certificate of immunization – the most recent copy documenting the child’s 5-year booster shots.

“Parents are welcome to walk around the building and see what kindergarten is going to be like,” Jones said.

For children to get a taste of kindergarten, DES holds two visiting days – local daycares were invited to tour the school yesterday, and Head Start is visiting today.

“We give them a tour of the building, we have them visit our art class to create a piece of artwork to take home, they visit our reading room, then we have snack,” Jones said.

Kindergarten is open for children who will turn 5 on or before Sept. 2, Jones said.

Registration will be held in the lobby of DES. Children should accompany their parents to take advantage of several screenings, and parents should allow about 45 minutes to complete the registration process.

Jones said parents with upcoming kindergarteners should attend registration even if they don’t have all the paperwork yet.

“No matter what they have, come on in and get the process started,” Jones said. “We’ll work on getting all those other things in.”

Kindergarten registration is also approaching for other local schools, including:

ν Horseshoe Bend School, April 25 from 1–6 p.m. and April 26 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Parents should bring proof of residency, blue immunization slip and birth certificate.

ν Reeltown Elementary School, April 19 from 8–10 a.m. and 1–2:30 p.m. in the library. Parents should bring two proofs of residency, blue immunization slip, Social Security card and birth certificate. Parents are encouraged to bring their children to registration.
