Barbecuing contest returns to lake areaPublished 12:27pm Saturday, March 30, 2013
Barbecuing is a Southern institution, and a local competition will allow cooks to show their prowess at this meaty tradition.
The 5th Annual Lake Martin Event Center at The Rodeo Club BBQ Cook Off, scheduled for May 10–11, is now open for registration.
“I’d love to see as much local participation as possible,” said Rodeo Club owner Ed Shikoski. “It’s a great time.”
Teams of cooks can sign up to compete in any or all of three categories: chicken, pork and ribs. First through third place winners will be awarded in each category after a blind judging using “a stringent code of rules and ethics,” Shikoski said.
“One team that did very well the first year has gone on to be professional,” Shikoski said. “They travel throughout the Southeast, and they now compete for tens of thousands of dollars.”
The two-day, family-friendly event is free to the public, and Shikoski said some people stretch the festivities beyond the weekend.
“Some of these teams begin setting up as early as Wednesday,” Shikoski said. “They’re just out there to let people sample and enjoy some good Southeastern BBQ.”
Attendees have the opportunity to sample the barbecued meat and enjoy live entertainment and drawings for prizes. Shikoski said they typically feed about 1,000 people.
Registration cost is $50 per category, and the deadline to sign up is May 4. Commemorative posters and T-shirts will also be for sale. To register or find out more call 256-825-7503.
