Career fair brings employers, job-seekers together

Employment could see an extra push in the area April 10 when the Lake Martin Area Career Fair comes to Central Alabama Community College.

“It is an annual thing that we sponsor here at CACC,” said event coordinator Denise Walls. “It’s open to the public … We suggest that you come as if you’re going to be going to a job interview.”

Walls said about 25 companies will be on hand to talk to prospective employees about available career opportunities. In addition, instructors from CACC will be available to talk to people about continuing their

education; and representatives from the career center will be present; and Marvin Wagoner will be available to talk about entrepreneurial efforts.

“We’ll also have some computers set up so if anyone needs to go online and submit an application they can do that,” Walls said.

Companies at the fair will be offering both full-time and part-time jobs, Walls said. Companies like Madix, SL Alabama and SJA will provide information on manufacturing jobs.

“It’s an opportunity for companies to hand pick (employees),” Walls said. “It presents an opportunity for companies to see that person in front of them and talk to them and get a better sense of whether it’s somebody they want to hire or not.”

Walls said the fair also allows people looking for jobs to submit many resumes all in one place instead of having to go all over town filling out applications.

Walls said dressing the part is essential for job-seekers.

“You don’t have to wear a suit or a tie,” Walls said. “Just wear nice khakis or dress pants and a nice shirt – be well groomed. You just want to make a good first impression.”

Those applying for manufacturing jobs could choose to wear jeans and a nice shirt, Walls said.
