Boys and Girls Club seeks volunteers

The Lake Martin Area Boys and Girls Club is seeking volunteers to help provide its activities to children.

“We’re actually trying to grow our volunteer list,” said Glen Travis, marketing coordinator. “We like to have as many volunteers as we can.”

The club has three volunteers right now, Travis said – a board member, a high school student, and an Auburn student, Hagen Vickers.

“I am currently a senior majoring in nutrition and dietetics,” said Vickers, a New Site native. “I decided to volunteer with the Boys and Girls Clubs after being asked to do service learning hours for one of my classes.”

Vickers said she wanted to volunteer at the Searcy Unit of the Boys and Girls Club because “it’s close to home and the kids are local.”

“I’ve really enjoyed working with the kids and getting to know them and the Boys and Girls Club staff,” Vickers said. “Some days you have hyper crazy kids and other days they’re just as good as they can be. It’s really a lot of fun.”

Travis said they are hoping other college students will opt to help out at the club, as well as anyone who wants to give them a hand.

“They have to go through a background check, and they have to be 18 or older,” Travis said.

Volunteers help with all kinds of activities, from sports and games to homework.

People interested in volunteering can call the club at 256-234-4757 or email bgc.gst21@yahoo.com to find out more about how to get involved.
