While spring break is usually a time for rest and relaxation, for Benjamin Russell and Dadeville it means it’s time for for a full week of baseball.
The 18th annual Lake Martin Classic begins Monday, March 25.  The four-day event will feature a 16-team round-robin style tournament.
In addition to BRHS and Dadeville, this year’s Classic is scheduled to have participants from various classifications.
The field includes Class 5A power house and No. 5 ranked Russell County,  Class 5A No. 9 ranked Chilton County and Class 4A No. 3 ranked Beauregard.
Boaz, Tallassee, Sylacauga, Alabama Christian, Clay-Central, Opelika, Westbrook, Valley, Prattville, Handley and Eufaula will round out the participating schools.
Russell County enters the event as the defending Lake Martin Classic champion. Benjamin Russell last won the event in 2011.
The Tigers and Wildcats are coming into the tournament on two very different wavelengths.
The 11-7 Wildcats come in with a record identical to the one they compiled at this time last year, but BRHS finds itself in a bit of a slump.
Despite having started the season strongly with a 7-2 record, the Wildcats have since gone 4-5.
They had won three straight games before losing two games to Dadeville this past Tuesday.
The 15-5 Tigers have done the opposite of their rivals across the river.
Dadeville started the year 3-4, but Randy Nolen’s ball club has been on fire as of late.
The Tigers seem to be heading into the Classic with a lot of momentum, having won 12 of their last 13 contests, including a current six-game winning streak.
Doc Jordan Field (located at the Charles E. Bailey Sportplex) and Central Alabama Community College will serve as primary hosts to the Classic.
Randy B. Nolen Field (located at McKelvey Park) will host three games during Tuesday’s full slate of action.
The action will begin at 10 a.m. at the Sportplex when BRHS takes on Westbrook to kick off the Classic.
The Wildcats will play twice on day one, while the Tigers will begin play in the Lake Martin Classic at 7 p.m. when they take on Prattville High School at CACC.
