Total Fitness to strive for its own ‘March Madness’

Published 12:35pm Tuesday, February 26, 2013

March Madness is about to take hold at Russell Medical Center.

Cara Tidwell, fitness coordinator for Total Fitness at RMC, said that Total Fitness will be offering a variety of cardio classes and free informative community events as part of March Madness, the term applied annually to collegiate basketball playoff season.

“Spring is right around the corner, and Scale Back Alabama ends in April – we thought it would be a good time to increase the motivation and adherence to exercise schedules within the community,” Tidwell said. “Adherence is the key to success in fitness.”

Tidwell said the gym will be offering Sweet 16 classes, which are 16 different cardio classes that will be held Monday–Thursday at 5:15 p.m.

Tidwell said people don’t have to be members to attend any of these classes, though there is a small daily charge for nonmembers.

“We would love to have everyone as a member, but if you want to try out our facility, the first visit is free and it is $5 every day after that,” Tidwell.

Tidwell said that they will also be offering Guilty Mondays. At 5:15 p.m. every Monday in March, cardio classes will be instructor’s choice.

“The instructors will teach their favorite workout,” Tidwell said, “We really want to challenge people to come out and enjoy these classes and reach their Scale Back Alabama goals.”

Guilty Monday’s will also feature an instructor-led cardio class held in the pool at 4 p.m.

Total Fitness will also be offering a variety of free informative programs every Friday.

“We will be offering Fit Fridays, which will be a community event for members and nonmembers,” Tidwell said.

Fit Friday will kick off March 1 with a Meet the Team program. Tidwell said participants can meet the Total Fitness Team – Matt Parker, Amy Jones and Cara Tidwell – ask questions and get a free fitness consultation.

Registered dietician Linda Moore will be available for March 8’s Fit Friday, which will feature a discussion of healthy snacks and eating.

On March 15, representatives from Russell Retail Store and Hibbett Sports will display the latest in fitness apparel.

“They will also be there to talk about what apparel is right based on your preferred activities,” Tidwell said.

Sports Medicine Coordinator Deborah Birrer will lead a discussion on injury prevention for recreational activities. The Fit Friday Finale is slated for March 29 and will feature a special health and wellness presentation by Jan Hare and Barbara Sokol.
