The Dadeville Lady Tigers punched their ticket to Birmingham with a 41-40 victory over Childersburg in the Class 4A Central Regional Championship.
Destiny Green led the team with 17 points and five boards and was named to the all-tournament team as well as the regional tournament’s most valuable player.
Fellow all-tournament team selection Rae Williams notched a double-double, overcoming a slow first-half to score 13 points and nab 14 boards.
She also had two blocks and two steals.
Janeisha Moss had seven points, six rebounds and three helpers.
The game started slowly for both teams as each squad mustered only six first quarter points.
Dadeville seized control in the second quarter, out-scoring  Childersburg 14-5 behind Green and Moss.
Dadeville’s defense was particularly effective as Childersburg connected on only 22 percent of its shots during the contest.
With Williams being bottled up in the paint, she expanded her shooting range and found her stroke, hitting two jumpers to push Dadeville to a 31-21 advantage heading into the fourth.
Childersburg came alive in the final quarter behind Malcanisha Kelley, who scored 13 of her game-high 23 points in the fourth.
Kelley was instrumental in a 9-0 that gave Childersburg a 38-37 lead with two minutes left.
Dadeville went to their star player in crunch time, as Williams scored Dadeville’s final five points, including the final free throw that was the difference.
“When that final buzzer went off, I had a little bit of shock,” DHS girls basketball coach Mitch Joiner said. “I can’t believe we pulled this off. When the game ended, it all hit me. We may not win in Birmingham, but we’re there. I’m just elated. We’re going to Birmingham.”
