Lady ‘Cats gone from playoffs

The Lady Wildcats’ hoops season has come to an end following a 53-39 loss to Sylacauga in Class 5A sub-regional action.
Benjamin Russell’s girls finish the season at 13-11.
“We played well,” BRHS girls basketball coach Ron Rowe said. “We were in the ball-game until the very end. Our girls played hard but we made some mistakes toward the end that cost us.”
Jernika Russell led the Lady Wildcats with 12 points. Aaliyah Lawson added 11 points.
After falling behind 19-10, BRHS fought back into the game, cutting the deficit to four.
Sylacauga continued to increase its lead but the Lady ‘Cats refused to go away, getting within one basket of the Lady Aggies late in the third quarter.
Sylacauga scored six straight to end the third, but Benjamin Russell opened the final quarter with a 4-0 run to make the score 37-34.
The Lady ‘Cats were outscored 15-5 for the rest of the game by Sylacauga. Reigning Class 5A player of the year Shakayla Thomas scored 12 points for the Lady Aggies in the fourth
“We held her in check for three quarters,” Rowe said.
Despite the loss, Rowe said the team’s spirits are up and they’re looking forward to next season.
“We’ve got 12 players coming back,” he said. “I’m proud of our girls and what they’ve done. We’re not down. We feel good about our growth and where we’re heading.”
