Coming up roses

Published 11:51am Thursday, February 14, 2013

Valentine’s Day is here, bringing one of the busiest days of the year for local florists.

While employees at LaKay’s and Lake Martin Flowers and Gifts said roses are most popular, a mixed flower arrangement – with Gerber daisies or alstroemeria, for example – can offer a more affordable option.

Emily McClendon at Lakay’s said while most people buy a dozen roses, which runs them $60, single sales can range from $6 all the way up to $100 or more.

“Flowers are just part of romancing,” said Lakay’s designer Pat Knox (pictured above).

Marsha Hanks at Lake Martin Flowers and Gifts said she has almost bought more flowers than her shop can hold, and she is looking forward to making a lot of sales for her first Valentine’s Day in business.

Peggy Bullard, Lakay’s owner, said a number of people will come in on Valentine’s Day to place their orders – not everyone orders in advance.
