Area play set to begin

As area play comes to a close, local teams are now gearing up for the start of the road to Birmingham.
Area tournament brackets have been released, and the basketball squads of Benjamin Russell, Dadeville, Central-Coosa, Horseshoe Bend and Reeltown high schools are aware of their destinations.
In the Class 5A, Area 5 brackets, the 9-14 Wildcat boys will be the third seed as they travel to Valley High School to face Booker T. Washington at 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 8
On the girls side, the Lady ‘Cats secured the second seed in the area and will travel along with the boys to Valley High School.
BRHS’ girls will also face Booker T. Washington. The game is set for Thursday, Feb. 7 at 5 p.m.
Dadeville’s boys  will travel to Handley High School in the Class 4A, Area 5 tourney.
Both Handley and Dadeville secured a 6-1 record in area play, with both teams’ lone loss coming at the hands of one another.
Handley won the coin toss and thus claimed home-court advantage.
DHS enters the tournament as the second seed and will face Clay-Central on Friday, Feb. 8 at 5:30 p.m.
The Lady Tigers earned the top seed in their area and will host the Class 4A, Area 5 tournament.
They have a first-round bye and will face the winner of Clay-Central vs. Beulah on Thursday, Feb. 7 at 6:30 p.m.
Central-Coosa’s boys also locked up the top seed in the Class 3A, Area 5 tournament and will host tournament play.
The 13-11 Cougars host fourth-seeded Thorsby on Friday, Feb. 8 at 7 p.m.
CCHS’ Lady Cougars will head to host Trinity High School and face B.B. Comer on Thursday, Feb. 7 at 5:30 p.m.
Horseshoe Bend will head to Lanett as the fourth seed in the Class 2A, Area 9 tournament.
The Generals take on the top-seeded Lanett squad on Friday, Feb. 8 at 6:30 p.m.
The Lady Generals also head to Lanett but will face Lafayette in their opening game.
Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 7.
Both the Reeltown boys and girls squads will head to Prattville Christian Academy in the Class 2A, Area 8 tournament.
The Rebels and Lady Rebels will each face Montgomery Academy in their opening game.
The boys’ game will be on Friday, Feb. 8 at 6 p.m.
The girls will have their game on Thursday, Feb.  7 at 6 p.m.
