Bassmasters series opens on Lake Martin

The Alabama South Division 2 of the Toyota Tundra Bassmasters Weekend Series kicks off its 2013 season at Lake Martin today, Feb. 2.
According to Bassmasters Weekend Series southeast regional tournament director Billy Benedetti, nearly 200 anglers with cast their lot in Lake Martin, hoping to land the biggest catch.
It is the 10th annual event held at Lake Martin, and is the first of five stops along the schedule.
The anglers will launch from Wind Creek State Park at 6:30 a.m. or at safe light, whichever comes first.
Anglers who are fishing in the Boater Division may weigh in up to five bass, each at least 12 inches long. Co-anglers may weigh in up to three bass.
According to a press release on the American Bass Anglers website, anglers can fish anywhere on the 44,000-acre impoundment in Tallapoosa, Elmore and Coosa counties.
In last year’s season-opening event on Feb. 11,  Kelley Jaye of Dadeville, won the Boater Division with a five-bass tournament limit that weighed in at over 15 pounds.
The weigh-ins are scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. and could last between two and two and a half hours.
The winner will receive a cash prize of $5,000, with the top 20 anglers guaranteed to leave with some sort of monetary prize.
“Alexander City has been a tremendous host.” Benedetti said. “The city goes above and beyond for the event.”
The event is open to the public at no cost.
