Relay kicks off with luncheon

Published 12:09pm Thursday, January 31, 2013

The Tallapoosa County 2013 Relay for Life will kick-off from noon to 1 p.m. at Russell Medical Center Feb. 6.

“Anyone interested in starting a team or finding out more information is encouraged to come,” said Mabry Cook, director of the Russell Medical Center Cancer Center. “Relay for Life always has great community support, and we’re looking to build on the great year we had last year. We’re looking forward to making 2013 even better.”

Cook said the kick-off will give those interested a chance to meet people involved with Relay for Life and will feature lunch provided by Russell Medical Center. Mayor Charles Shaw will serve as the speaker for the event.

“It will be informational and hopefully help people meet contacts who participate in Relay and hopefully put a face with a name,” Cook said. “There is no cost to attend, but we do ask that people RSVP for the event.”

Cook said the kick-off luncheon will be held in conjunction with the Today Our Understanding of Cancer is Hope (TOUCH) support group meeting, which offers support to cancer survivors, their families and loved ones.

“TOUCH has been gracious enough to allow us to share meeting time,” Cook said. “A lot of the TOUCH members are very involved in relay so this is a great connection.”

Cook said the theme for the 2013 relay is, “Freedom from Cancer, A United State of Mind.”

To RSVP for the kick-off lunch, contact Bridget Thornell at bhand@russellmedcenter.com or 256-329-7888.
