The Central-Coosa Cougars took down the Elmore County Panthers 76-59, thanks to an offensive show by Xavier Moon.
Moon scored 50 points to lead Central-Coosa to its second straight win. The Cougars are now 13-10 on the year.
Moon was unstoppable from beginning to end, scoring 14 points in the opening quarter thanks to his ability to penetrate the interior defense of Elmore County, which went into the second quarter down 23-9.
The Panthers wouldn’t be deterred, opening the second quarter with a 5-0 run while most of Central-Coosa’s squad went cold. Moon was the only offense for the Cougars in that period, scoring all 12 points.
The Panthers continued their comeback in the third, eventually deadlocking the game at 45 all.
From here, Moon and the Cougars took over the game.
A slashing lay-in by Moon kicked off a 26-5 run that closed the third quarter and ran well into the fourth quarter, putting the game out of reach.
“During that run, I saw Xavier’s shot come back,” CCHS boys’ basketball coach Joe Belyeu said. “I thought that was a pleasant surprise. It’s good to see because he won’t be able to penetrate as easily as he did against other teams.”
While happy about the win, Belyeu said the Cougars had a lot to correct before their next game against Benjamin Russell.
“We didn’t play defense and we missed a lot of wide open looks,” he said. “Now we prepare for those giants at (BRHS).”
