What began as a special night for Horseshoe Bend basketball coach Mike Boyd ended up being another night at the office for Xavier Moon.
Central-Coosa’s star swingman netted 37 points in leading the Cougars over the Generals in a 54-43 overtime victory.
The win improves Central-Coosa’s record to 12-10 while Horseshoe Bend falls to 9-11 on the season.
The night where Boyd had the HBHS gymnasium dedicated in his honor began smoothly thanks to Jay Glenn and the Generals.
Horseshoe Bend headed into the break up 25-17, thanks to Glenn scoring 12 of his team-high 23 points in the first two quarters.
Moon was the lone bright spot for Central-Coosa for the first four quarters. He scored all of the Cougars’ 17 first half points.
“When he goes, we go,” Central-Coosa boys basketball coach Joe Belyeu said. “I knew coming into the game that it would be a tough one to win with everything that was going on. We weathered the storm.”
Central-Coosa’s increased on-the-ball defense in the second half stymied HBHS’ offense, which had relied heavily on the three-ball to that point.
After Moon scored the final four points of the fourth quarter to knot the game at 36, his teammates took over.
TyJustin Gaddis scored four points in extra time while Quin Robbins added 10 points, seven of them coming in overtime.
Central-Coosa started the extra period on an 11-0 run, which was too much for the Generals to overcome.
“We had a chance to win the ball game,” Boyd said. “We just didn’t get it done.”
