Friends of Camp ASCCA to host 18th annual charity dance, auction

The Friends of Alabama’s Special Camp for Children and Adults invites the Lake Martin Area to join them for dinner and dancing.

The volunteer group will host its 18th annual charity dance and silent auction from 6 to 11 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9 with all proceeds benefiting Camp ASCCA, a camp for children and adults with disabilities.

“The money raised from this event goes toward our Campership Fund,” said Dana Rickman, director of marketing communications. “Each year 95 percent of our campers apply for some type of financial assistance to come to camp – be it a partial or full scholarship. This money goes to fund those scholarships.”

She said the event’s silent auction will be making a return this year and will feature mostly gift certificates and packages.

“We’re hoping to raise about $3,000 to $5,000 with the silent auction,” Rickman said. “We didn’t do it last year and people missed it so we’re bringing it back, but it will be a little different.”

She said Route 66 will be providing live music.

“Route 66 played at our prom this past summer and our campers really enjoyed it,” Rickman said. “They play a lot of different genres of music so we thought they’d be perfect for this event. We will have everyone from young college age people to seniors attending, and we want everyone to have a good time.”

Rickman said the event will feature a carving station and heavy hors d’oeuvres and will again be hosted at the Event Center Downtown in Opelika.

“We used to have this at our Dadeville campus but that was destroyed in April 2011,” Rickman said. “We had it last year at the Event Center and think it’s the perfect place to have it.”

Rickman said she expects about 300 people to attend the event, and welcomes anyone who would like to.

“Anyone is welcome to contact me if they’d like to attend and I’ll send them an invitation,” Rickman said.

Tickets are $75 per person or $150 per couple.
