Missing man found deadPublished 11:15am Saturday, January 19, 2013
A case of a missing person ended tragically Friday when a 60-year-old man was found dead near his home on Fish Pond Road.
Melvin Edwards, of Alexander City, was discovered around 11:30 a.m. Friday in the woods 40 or so yards from his home.
“We don’t expect any foul play, but we are starting our investigation,” said Lt. Jay Turner, with the Alexander City Police Department.
Turner said that the body will be sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences for an autopsy.
Turner said the family reported that Edwards had been missing since Monday, but the case was not reported until late Thursday evening.
Turner said that missing person cases are investigated as soon as they are reported.
“We start our initial investigation by interviewing the family members and trying to figure out the last place the individual was seen,” Turner said. “The last time anyone saw him, he was at his house.”
Turner said that police and the Alexander City Rescue Squad led a sweep of the area surrounding Edwards’ residence, which led to the body being discovered.
It is unknown when Edwards passed away, but police believe the body may have been in the woods for a few days,
“Everything so far looks like he might have been there since Monday,” Turner said.
