Suspect in custody after discharging firearm at Walmart

Published 11:12am Tuesday, January 1, 2013

Rumors of a shooting a Walmart yesterday proved to be false, according to the Alexander City Police Department.

There were shots fired according to Lt. Jay Turner, but the rounds were fired in the air and no injuries were reported.

“A gentleman with an infant child went to retrieve some property from his spouse when he was confronted by two males who instigated an altercation,” Turner said. “At that point, the man pulled a firearm out of the vehicle and fired it in the air.”

John Freeman Jr., 22, of Alexander City, was charged with reckless endangerment and discharging a firearm in city limits.

Turner said that a sheriff’s deputy was present when the incident occurred.

“There happened to be a county deputy who had pulled up to serve paperwork (for an unrelated incident) who took control of the incident,” Turner said.
