The probate office staff threw a surprise party for retiring Probate Judge Gloria Sinclair Friday afternoon in the third floor courtroom at the Tallapoosa County Courthouse.

Sinclair said she was told she had a commitment hearing that afternoon and that a lot of people had come.

“I said, ‘Oh, it’s going to be so much controversy, such a fuss,” Sinclair said.

She said she was surprised to find all the people who had gathered to extend their well wishes.

Cake, finger foods and punch were served as friends and family filtered in and out during the two-hour period to wish their best to Sinclair, including former probate judge Donald Fox and future probate judge Leon Archer.

“She was absolutely floored when she walked through the door,” said Debbie Evers from the probate office. “She said, ‘I told y’all not to do anything.’ But she thoroughly enjoyed it.”

Archer will be sworn in Jan. 11.
