Dawkins goes above and beyond

Published 12:27pm Friday, December 28, 2012

Dear Editor,

A special shout out to all our Meals On Wheels volunteers but particularly to Randy Dawkins.  Randy, along with a group at Aliant Bank, takes a weekly Meals On Wheels route delivering meals to homebound residents in Alexander City.  A couple of weeks ago, Randy came to deliver his usually uneventful route only to find one client unable to answer the door.

He knocked and phoned with no luck then heard the resident calling for help!  Turns out the resident had injured his shoulder a few days earlier and had fallen the night before. He was unable to get to the phone or door, but he knew Meals on Wheels would be there the next day.

Alex City Rescue and the family were called, and fortunately, because of Randy’s efforts, the resident was OK.   Just think about what tragic outcome we could have had if not for Randy’s efforts.

This is not the first incident involving one of our volunteers intervening on behalf of one of our clients.  So thank you, Randy, and to all our volunteers.  You just never know when you will make a difference in someone’s life, and we appreciate each and every one of you.

Sincerely,

Michael L. Thaxton

President, Meals On Wheels of Alexander City
