Local stores see few initial returns on purchased Christmas merchandise

Local retailers saw a steady increase of sales before Christmas but have not yet seen a rush of after-Christmas returns.

Goody’s manager Meagon Wood said this year has been a strong shopping season.

“We’ve done really well this year,” Wood said. “We’re hoping this week will continue to be busy so we can close out the year strong.”

Wood said although foot traffic was steady before Christmas, returns have not yet been high.

“That’s a good thing,” Wood said. “It means people were satisfied with their purchases.”

Cato Fashions in Alexander City was another local business that saw solid holiday sales, but is not seeing a lot of returned merchandise.

“We were pretty busy this year, but we haven’t had many returns yet due to the holidays,” said store manager Seamone White.

Return policies vary by store, but local retailers agreed having an ID and receipt available makes the return go more quickly.

White said Cato offers customers up to 90 days to return merchandise with a receipt.

Walmart’s return period depends on the item purchased. According to their website, electronics like computers, camcorders, digital cameras, e-tablets and e-readers must be returned within 15 days. Equipment such as lawn mowers, hedge trimmers and chain saws must be returned within 30 days.

If these items were purchased between Nov. 1 and Dec. 24, the time period begins Dec. 26. Most items have a 90-day return window, which is not altered by the holidays.

According to Home Depot’s return policy, a sales receipt is also needed to make a return and needs to be done with 90 days of purchase. Returns are not available on custom made products and custom tinted paint, utility trailers, gift cards, gift certificates and store credits.

Fred’s return policy says that “if you are not fully satisfied with your Fred’s purchase, return it to any Fred’s store with the original sales receipt for a full-refund.” It also said that if you don’t have a receipt the store can exchange your purchase for another item of equal or lesser value.

Dollar General’s return policy also requires a receipt if the consumer wants cash in return. Otherwise, without a receipt the consumer will only receive a gift card or item of equal value of the returned item’s current price.

Factory Connection’s return policy also says that without a receipt a customer cannot be given cash.

“A receipt is required for cash back. Otherwise, we can only exchange an item,” said Debra Messick of Factory Connection.
