Cowart moves to advertising; Bailey joins team

Tallapoosa Publishers, Inc. has made several changes in its advertising and editorial departments.

Former Sports Editor J.D. Cowart has accepted a position as a TPI advertising representative, beginning immediately. Cowart has served as TPI’s sports editor since April 2011.

“It was a great experience reporting and being involved with the local sports of Tallapoosa County over the last year and a half. Being able to enjoy athletic competition and accurately tell stories I thought readers would be interested in was a thrill for me,” Cowart said. “I also want to thank all the coaches and players that have helped me on a daily basis over that time period.”

Advertising Director Tippy Hunter said she is “excited to have J.D. as part of the team.”

“His knowledge of the area and the relationships he has made through his time as sports editor make him a very valuable addition to the TPI marketing team,” Hunter said. “J.D. also brings a wealth of knowledge to many areas we’d like to focus on in coming years. Adding that to his larger-than-life personality helps solidify the team we have in place.”

Cowart can be reached at 256-234-4281, ext. 34, or jd.cowart@alexcityoutlook.com.

Replacing Cowart is Ed Bailey, who began working as TPI’s sports editor Dec. 17.

“I’m very excited to get to know the coaches, athletes and people of Alexander City,” Bailey said. “I’m looking forward to telling their stories, covering their games and contributing to the community while having a chance to enjoy sports on one of its purest levels. I can’t say how grateful I am that TPI took a chance on me, and I have no intentions of letting them down.”

Bailey graduated from Troy University in December 2012 with a Master’s degree in sports and fitness management. Bailey also earned his bachelor’s degree in print journalism from Troy University in 2010.

“While the newsroom will certainly miss J.D., I have no doubts that Ed can fill his shoes beautifully and continue to provide the quality sports coverage for which we strive daily,” said General Manager and Managing Editor Virginia Spears. “I look forward to seeing both J.D. and Ed accomplish great things in their respective departments.”

Bailey, who is a Union Springs native, said his favorite teams are the Troy Trojans and the Miami Hurricanes. He can be contacted at 256-234-4281, ext. 18, or at ed.bailey@alexcityoutlook.com.
