The Benjamin Russell High School wrestling team traveled to Alabaster to take part in the 2012 Alabama Duals tournament this past Saturday, coming away with a eighth place finish overall.
The Wildcats finished second in their pool, besting Vestavia Hills High School 37-33 in round one and cruising to an easy victory over Clay-Chalkville High School by a score of 45-18 in round two.
Hoover High School downed Benjamin Russell 42-27 to win the pool. By virtue of the Wildcats’ two victories over Vestavia Hills and Clay-Chalkville High School, the Wildcats wrestling team locked up a chance to grapple for seventh place.
The early successes of pool play did not follow Benjamin Russell into the championship rounds, as the Wildcats were defeated by the Yellowjackets of Oxford High School by a final score of 51-18.
The loss assured Benjamin Russell High School of an eighth-place overall finish.
Thompson High School, which hosted the event, entered three teams into the tournament. The two-time defending state champions saw two of those three teams earn a place in the championship brackets.
Thompson High School Black finished first, and Thompson High School Red finished fifth.
Next up for the BRHS wrestling squad is the Scott Rhorer Invitational in Hoover Dec. 29.
