A two-car accident on U.S. 280 left a police car with major damage after one driver allegedly ran a red light.

According to three witness reports, Ronald Lawhorn, 63, of Alexander City, ran through the intersection and slammed into the side of a 2008 Crown Victoria owned by the Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Department. Jason Lee Hilyer, 35, of Alexander City was driving the Crown Victoria.

Hilyer was turning onto Hwy. 63 when the accident occurred.

Hilyer was not harmed, but the accident caused major damage to the unmarked police cruiser, which was towed from the scene.

Lawhorn’s vehicle sustained minor damage to the front left corner of the pickup, but neither of the two occupants were injured.
