BRHS swimmers finish top-20 at state meetPublished 9:36am Wednesday, December 5, 2012
Benjamin Russell High School senior Matt Wilson and sophomore Robert Howard turned in impressive finishes this past weekend at the AHSAA State Swimming and Diving Championships at the James E. Martin Aquatic Center at Auburn University.
The finishes were good enough for Benjamin Russell to place 16th in the state out of 42 total teams, despite BRHS only having two swimmers.
Wilson finished in ninth place in the 100 yard Butterfly with a personal best time to end his high school career.
The senior then went on to finish 15th place in the 200 yard Freestyle with a personal best time as well.
Howard finished in second place in the 100 yard Freestyle, being out touched by senior Corey Holmes of Spain Park by eight-one-hundredths of a second. The time was Howard’s personal best in his young career.
The sophomore went on to then place second in the 200 yard Freestyle, finishing with another personal best time, as well as the team record for Auburn Aquatics, his club swim team.
“Both of these guys really exceeded my expectations and came out and did really well when they needed to,” said Auburn Aquatics head coach Jeff Dellinger.
“(Wilson) stepped up for his senior finish and finished his career strong and I’m proud of what he accomplished.”
As for Howard, the sophomore continues to turn heads with local and college coaches, as Dellinger went on to add that his talent and work ethic will give him the opportunity to excel.
“I can’t say enough about Robert and the way he approaches the sport with his ability and work ethic,” Dellinger added.
“Coaches think that he is older than he is when he gets in the pool and he’s already drawing college interest for what he is able to do.”
Wilson and Howard will next compete in the 2013 Southeastern Short Course Championships in Nashville, Tennessee in late February.
