Published 9:40am Wednesday, December 5, 2012

Former Benjamin Russell High School standout and current University of Alabama-Birmingham offensive lineman Cameron Blankenship has been named to the All-Freshman Conference USA Team.
Blankenship, who was an All-Outlook performer and Outlook Super-12 team member in 2011, made a strong impact in his first season at UAB, starting the final nine games of the season at offensive guard as a true freshman.
Along with Blankenship on the All-Freshman Conference USA Team is UAB quarterback Austin Brown.
Brown, a redshirt freshman, passed for 2,673 yards and 15 touchdowns in eight starts this season. He ranked No. 6 overall among Conference USA quarterbacks in passing yards per game at 222.8.
Blankenship helped lead Benjamin Russell to a 7-5 record and a berth in the second round of the Class 6A AHSAA state playoffs in his senior season in 2011 and is expected to continue to be a fixture on the offensive line for the Blazers throughout the future.
UAB finished the 2012 season with a 3-9 record under head coach Garrick McGee’s first year.
