Funeral service for Dr. George Ralph Carlton, 90, of Alexander City, will be Wednesday, November 21, 2012 at 11:00 am at the Chapel of Radney Funeral Home.

Rev. Larry Stephens will officiate.  Burial will follow in the Hillview Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 20, 2012 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Radney Funeral Home.

Dr. Carlton passed away on Sunday, November 18, 2012 at Bill Nichols State Veterans Home.  He was born on February 27, 1922 in Tallapoosa County, Alabama to George Rufus Carlton and Eleanor Dennis Carlton.
He was a member of First Baptist Church of Alexander City, AL.  Dr. Carlton graduated from Alexander City High School, Auburn University, and Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, TN.  He worked in the medical field as an Optometrist and also served on the Chair of Emergency Welfare (Community Chest); the State Board of Examiners for 25 years, under five Governors; Cofounder of the School of Optometry at The University of Alabama at Birmingham; and President of the State Board of Optometry for several terms.  Dr. Carlton was also a U.S. Army Veteran and was a member of the 2nd Bombardment Company where he flew 52 Missions in WWII.  He was a Charter Member of the Civitans and enjoyed Auburn football and attending the games.  He also enjoyed farming and looking after his blueberries.  Dr. Carlton will always be remembered as caring person and wonderful husband, father, and grandfather.

He is survived by his sons, Jeff Carlton (Dorothy) of Alexander City and George Ralph “Buster” Carlton, Jr. (Angela) of Sylacauga; grandchildren, Amy O’Neal (Mike) of Sylacauga, Laura Lee (Mike) of Winter Park, FL, Zackery Carlton of Sylacauga, Nancy Bendinger (Doug) of Auburn, Robert Dalton Carlton (Sandra) of Montgomery, and Jeffrey Ross Carlton (Dallis) of Opelika; great-grandchildren, Addison Grace, Anslee, and Alex Frank all of Sylacauga, Dalton Ruth Bendinger of Auburn, Seth O’Neal of Sylacauga, and Ginny and Walker Lee both of Winter Park, FL.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Robbie Clenney Carlton; his parents; brothers, Charles Carlton, Reginald Carlton, and James Carlton; and sister, Dessie Bonner.
